Part 1 of 2:

Christine Comaford-Lynch’s first book, Rules for Renegades: How to Make More Money, Rock Your Career, and Revel in Your Individuality, reveals the rules and applications necessary to obtain any endeavor YOU desire, regardless of the business model. She delivers to the reader a compilation of essential concepts not found in traditional entrepreneurial books. Do you fit the traditional model of Corporate America? Are you looking for ways to be yourself and stand out in your occupation? What is a renegade? In the words of Christine,

You’re a renegade–you have a level of passion and commitment that others don’t. You’re apt to break the rules that are blocking you from getting things done. You’re a renegade because you want to build something great, have a fulfilling career, and not be required to sacrifice yourself on the alter of success. (ix)

The idea that we are renegades is freeing and uplifting. Our “illusions” are developed by Ponn Sabra and Christine because they provide resources of empowerment. We are renegades, in the sense that we are defying the traditional model of corporate success. We create our experiences. Your motivation to apply these rules to your endeavors will affect your life. How many of you are working from home or have a contract which allows you to work from home part-time due to family or personal needs. The business world is evolving to become the Illusion we need it to be–one that embraces individuals who work hard to make their “illusions” a reality. While reading Rules for Renegades, I felt as if I were sharing a conversation with a friend over coffee. With a sense of humor, sincerity and the results of her life story, Christine Comaford-Lynch demonstrates that success is obtainable by being a renegade and following ten rules.

1. Everything’s an Illusion, so Pick One That’s Empowering:

Christine delves straight into action with an illustration of her first company. Within a day, she had a company set up with thirty-five employees. The majority of entrepreneurial books talk about the Plan and how important it is to have in place before committing to the business. I was very impressed by the idea that a business is possible without an in depth plan in place. Granted, this may not be the best approach for everyone, but with the right drive and personality, a person can succeed by getting the journey started. No part of the journey is going to be simple, but sometimes we over think the ideas or concepts and remove ourselves from the challenge. I know I’ve bypassed opportunities because I didn’t think I had a well thought out plan. How about you? Christine also analyzes judgment, negativity and the ability to change course and “reinvent yourself!” (Lynch 9 ). By the end of the chapter, the action items are manageable and practical to define and achieve goals. This is a book you can grow with in developing your Illusions in life! What illusions do you want to create for yourself, your life and your business?

2. An MBA is Optional, a GSD is Essential

The “Just Do It” attitude of “Get Stuff Done” is critical to be successful. This isn’t just the mantra of big dreams; it’s the reality of making dreams come true. Christine illustrates through multiple examples that it is our job to take action and “Get Stuff Done.” By being aware of the people you surround yourself with, creating affirmations and visualizations, and taking action, she faces the hard work required to achieve goals. What have you done to fulfill the needs of your business? What actions have you taken to make your illusions a reality? Follow Christine’s 10 steps to GSD and you’ll be well on your way toward success.

3. Problems+ Pain = Profit

By recognizing and capitalizing on other peoples’ needs, you are capable of creating a successful business. Christine explains how important it is to be aware of your surroundings. Do you see a need that is not serviced? She outlines a simple three step process to launching a solution. She demonstrates how all points revert back to the illusion. “Train yourself to look at the big picture and to see that everything is an illusion. And, of course, pick one that’s empowering!” (61). Christine sprinkles gems of wisdom and practical advise throughout the book. She discusses the importance of designing the business plan and working with it. If you’re in need of money, you’ll need to ensure the business plan is “concise, compelling and complete” (67).

4. Build Power Instead of Borrowing It

How have you let power affect your position in business or life? Relationships can cripple power. Be aware of your inner self and ability to control power. Don’t let others be the source of your power. How often have you let relationships with friends, family or people you know create a connection or void with power? Christine devotes personal examples and humorous interpretations to really bring this point home. She throws in quirky and entertaining subtopics. She poses questions to us and uses her examples to clearly lay out the solutions in overcoming the power struggle.
