“The netiquette and copyright laws of the Blogoshphere…

…require that you give the appropriate credit to the URL you refer to in a post” says Roseanne van Langenberg publisher of the Marketing Defined Blog.

Much thanks and appreciation goes to Ms. van Langenberg for her comments regarding my post Business Blogging the Underachiever Way on Tuesday, February 8, 2005.

Another extremely important legal point she made was, ‘”Also pointing your readers to download a manual from my website is a “bandwidth” infringement - ie. you are pointing to a free download off my website, therefore if anyone downloads that PDF from my website on your referral you are guilty of stealing my bandwith which I pay my webhost good money for each month. You need to fix this by doing an edit on your post and pointing out that you read this article on Business Blogging at the Marketing Defined Post, and give me credit for same … also please download the manual and then upload it to your server, and point your readers to download directly from your server or domain … otherwise kindly remove reference to the free manual available from my site and the applicable URL.”

Yikes!

The extremely embarrassing thing is: I just found her extremely polite, generous and even encouraging personal comment to me, just now…this very minute….DAYS later.

I immediately corrected the issues please note: Business Blogging the Underachiever Way .

Yeah, I can hide and delete the whole thing as if nothing happened, especially since I’m new and only got a dozen hits so far.

Or I can be an Empwered Women Entrepreneur who owns up to her mistakes and while ignorance is not an excuse, it’s an extremely important lesson for me to share all Newbies, Blog, Website and Ezine Publishers…and Enlightened Women Entrepreneurs striving to be Empowered. Be empowered! I’ve never hid before, nor will I start.

Be your “best” self, and do the right thing no matter how hard it is. Shallow your pride, apologize and have courage to explain and express yourself. Most of all, learn from your mitakes and grow.

I feel a huge amount of gratitude to Ms. van Langenberg (or Rox, if she still permits). While she made her second comments “public”, I feel its my responsibility to express my sincere apologies directly to her with an explanation for what looked like I ignored her extremely gracious attempt to give me a personal tip and prevent a legal lawsuit.

The problem is if you try to click on her links, none of them are working. So I can not even personally contact her myself. So I’m relying on this blog hoping that she finds her way to me again.

Ms. van Langenberg, I’m sorry, thank you, and may this world have more Empowered Women Entrepreneurs, like you. You offered yourself on a personal level, and I’m forever grateful.

Other things I learned:

(1) Check your comments. Ever since I started, I only dreamed of getting feedback, and Ed’s was so encouraging. Eagerly waiting for more, I thought I checked the right place each day, but obviously I did not. Because I just found 4 posts on 3 separate topics of mine.

(2) I haven’t figured out teh difference or how to post personal notes and public ones, and

(3) Where’s the date of each post? I found the times, but I don’t even know how long the delay was between Ms. van Langerberg’s first personal post and second public one.

Rest assured, when I find out I’ll let you know.

To our empowerment, Ponn

One Response to ““The netiquette and copyright laws of the Blogoshphere…”

  1. Many thanks for your gracious comments - I am hardly a tiger (and please my name is Rox or Roseanne).. I merely pointed out to you at the beginning, the correct way to go about things.
My domain was offline for a whole 6 hours due to the fact that I am based a whole Continent away from my excellent webhost http://www.market35.thirdsphereclassic.com - kindly do alter the URL that you have to the “suspended” domain, that is only a temporary URL if offline for one reason or another.
The comments you deleted were about 3 - 4 days apart … and that is exactly why I recommend shifting to a more professional and “free” Commenting and Trackback system which shows the time and date of Comments. Please refer my Post on free Commenting and Trackback (January archives) which gives you clear steps on how to self-instal this service in 2 clicks.

Also if you decide to shift to self hosting your blog on your own webhosting service, you can then log in every day and check your accurate statistics.
Ponn, please do alter the incorrect URL, and you can also enable Blogger to email you each time you get a Comment, so you are instantly notified (that can be set up in you dashboard easily).
My very best wishes to you .. please keep in touch and let me know how you do ..
    Warmly
    Roseanne
