Fulfill Your Goals by Creating Incentives or Consequences

Woman holding cat food -- eew yucko!“It All Comes Down to Cat Food”

I have an old friend whom is a very successful Real Estate Agent in Utah. In just one year he sold 112 homes!! But, truth be told, he didn’t start off that great. When he first started he didn’t have any luck listing many clients even though he’s a super friendly guy. He didn’t know what he was doing wrong.

Ultimately, he decided that he should interview the most successful agents in the area and take them to lunch to see what they did well and what he could implement. One woman said, “Well…it all comes down to cat food.” He was curious about that! She told herself that if she didn’t meet her daily goals then she would force herself to eat a can of cat food that night. GROSS!! Her incentive worked (because she enforced them) and she fulfilled her goals! My friend followed her footsteps with a different consequence, shooting himself in the rear with a BB gun if he didn’t finish his goals. He said after 4 days of not fulfilling his goals he finally started to do them and kicked his rear in gear (instead of shooting it!) Now he has a thriving business with several employees and tells them that creating consequences is a key to success.

Here’s Three Keys to Fulfilling Goals:

1. Build a Support System Those of you who read Wendy Piersall’s blog know that on Mondays she does “Monday Motivation” with a similar consequence…if she doesn’t clean out her emails then she has a consequence, such as she’ll have to cut her hair, give up coffee for a week or give away her favorite jeans. Wendy is essentially asking her readers to support her goals when she blogs about what she is going to accomplish and then she asks them to do the same. Wendy’s support system is the eMom at Home readers…who is yours? Your spouse? best friend? business partner?

Ask someone to support you with your daily, weekly, and monthly goals. One way that has been effective for me is to email or text a friend (whom I’ve previously arranged to be my support system) and tell them what my goal is and then before bed I just email or text Y for “yes” or N for “no”. No excuses!!!
2. Reward or Punish Yourself Here is where cat food, BB guns, or hair cutting comes into action…you decide what will motivate you into action! Maybe you work better on a reward system than a punishment system. I motivate myself to clean my house by planning a big party with friends on the weekend as my reward, and then after they leave it’s still relatively clean for the next week. I’m a big deadline girl…give me a project with a deadline it’ll be done in time. I usually tell myself “when this project is done I’ll do…” (call a friend, read a magazine, etc.) If you punish yourself, do it immediately upon the deadline, don’t postpone it a minute further.

3. Set Realistic Goals for Yourself as you “eat the elephant, one bite at a time” Recently I ran a 5k and it was a giant “elephant” for me—I could hardly run to the stop sign on my street! I decided it was time to get in better shape. The month before the race I set daily and weekly goals and by the day of the race I was able to sustain a jog for the entire race with 12 min. miles and I felt like a champion! ;) I truly felt like an “empowered woman” because I stuck to my goal and had a support system in place (my family), they knew I was going to run because I was training everyday, and ultimately they were there to cheer me on as I crossed the finish line.

You too are a champion of your dreams…as I always say, Make a Wish, Make it Happen!

  1. Great article, thanks!

  2. Thanks, good tips.

I don’t know if I could enforce the consequences I set up for myself…and it seems like it might be a set up for me…but I bet I can tweak it to make it work.

I sure need some structure in my worklife!

  3. Thanks Ponn for the opportunity to be a guest blogger here at the famous Empower Women Now blog!

Dylan-Good luck designing your incentives/consequences systems! You can do it! ;)

  4. […] get things done? A reward or a punishment? In a guest post for Fairy Godmother Ponn Sabra, “Fulfilling Your Goals by Creating Incentives or Consequences” I tell a story about a friend of mine who built a very successful real estate business by punishing […]

  5. that is too funny! Great ideas. I need to give myself some sort of incentive or punishment. Just like little kids we need to be rewarded!!

Kelly did write a great guest post ;-) Hope you stick around!

Structure for biz can be met by “systems”…and one system as Kelly suggests are incentives or consequences. I’ve been a more “incentive/rewards” person though :-(

I have enough physical pain & suffering–I don’t need to put more pressure on me. Although, I do recommend it for those who are more driven this way–such as my dear soul sistah Wendy.

Great post! Great dialogue! Great work–as always ;-)
I’m really happy to see the warm welcome, although I couldn’t add my little one-liners here & there…time is limited…the move is not complete yet. So, thanks for posting!

    hee hee. I agree. ;-)

As for my rewards–I tie them all into “cool treats” for me & my girlz…shopping, reading, books, and well—my 7 year old put the pressure on. I promised and I have to give her her Internet Branded awesome blog up & running within 30 days. She’s SO psyched! And, so am I.

  7. Great article!!! I too, am trying to run a 5k. I was supposed to start training over a month ago. With less than a month to go before the 5k I decided that I would jump start my training on Monday and pray for the best!!!

  8. Vanessa,
I have a 5k next Saturday and i’m not really ready like I was for my previous one, because my husband’s been out of town all week and couldn’t get away to run, but the thing is that with 5k’s is that they are generally casual and if you can’t keep jogging/running, give yourself a break by walking through the water stations and then you’ll have a bit more strength. Save your energy for the end too…who wants to walk the finish line? ;) Good luck!

    I’ve never been a long-distance runner–I’ve only ran 5K 2-3 times in my life…as you can expect I’ve always been a sprinter ;-) [Energy boom-shell]

Speed has always been my adrenaline-level. But, especially with my new diagnosis…I’m interested in the slow & steady to “win” my race in life. An inspirational more “disabled” colleague of mine with similar brain disorder turned his life around by ultimately running a marathon–which in turn he raised funds for our Conquer Chiari Campaign…so, I know one day I, too, will be running/jogging/fast-walking/walking distances again…

I have to say, simply being “home” in CT my body, mind & soul is totally uplifted!

So, best of luck Vanessa dear!

    Kelly
Keep us posted with your 2nd-go-round ;-)

    And, great advice…hee hee LOL!
